Using LaGrange College resources to find your ancestor

We receive many calls from people looking for an ancestor who attended LaGrange College and if there is any information available on her/him. Here are some useful FAQs which may assist you with your search.
Did they attend LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia? There are several LaGrange Colleges in the United States, so a bit of research may be necessary. The school was founded as LaGrange Female Academy in 1831, and was located in a building known as the Stanley School at 406 Broad St. The name changed to LaGrange Female Institute in 1847, and then LaGrange Female College in 1851. The name was changed again, to LaGrange College, in 1934, and became co-ed in 1953.
When did they attend? The LaGrange College catalogs (also sometimes called catalogues or bulletins) are available online beginning with the year 1848. The early bulletins contain the names of the alumnae and their date of graduation. These catalogs also contain interesting information about the governance of LaGrange Female College. Search for LaGrange College + [year] in the Search box, and change the date for a new search. The Quadrangle yearbooks are also online at archive.org.
How can I preserve my family's memorabilia? We get questions frequently on how to preserve family photographs, news clippings, and other memorabilia so Archives and Special Collections has compiled some links that will help you save your family history for the next generation. You may find old photographs in shoe boxes or albums where the paper is doing invisible harm. We hope you will find it useful.
The Library of Congress has a series of videos about visual literacy with prints and photographs. Often there are many family photographs to sort through and it is useful to train yourself to observe the clothing, hairstyles, and/or other details to help you identify relatives or a certain time frame.
The National Archives has excellent information on preservation of family papers: http://www.archives.gov/research/census.
