English Research Guide: Books & E-Books

This online guide contains helpful resources and tips to assist students taking English courses at LaGrange College with easier access to the library's materials.

Books & E-books

Use the online catalog to find books and e-books (or DVDs or CDs) in Lewis Library.

To find books about an author, do a Subject search:

To ensure you get books of literary criticism (rather than biographies), access the Catalog Record for a book and see whether the subject heading includes the words "Criticism and Interpretation."

Click the link (Wilson, August--Criticism and interpretation) to find other books with criticism about the author.

If you want to ensure that the book is scholarly, look at the catalog record. Is the publisher a University Press? If so, it's scholarly. If not, ask a librarian; many publishers of scholarly books (e.g., Routledge and Twayne) don't have the words "University Press" in their names.

If you're looking for books with information on a particular short story (poem, novel, play, etc.), do NOT type the title of the story into the online catalog's search box. Instead, look up the title in the INDEX in the back of the book to see which pages cover this work:

If you're not sure how to open e-books, see this.
