JSTOR is a retrospective database that contains scholarly articles in PDF format. These articles are typically characterized by having “further reading.” Journals included in JSTOR often represent a complete run from volume 1, issue 1 to within about five years of the present.
JSTOR provides several videos and tutorials that are well worth the time watching.

Academic Search Complete is an EBSCO Host database that contains resources for many different disciplines and subjects. It is advised that students learn to use the “Advanced Search” when constructing a search using Boolean connectors “AND, OR, NOT.” It is also recommended that students check the box for “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed)Journals to ensure that results will yield articles suitable for academic research.

The ProQuest Research Library is another general database that covers many different disciplines and subjects. ProQuest gives you an option to search with a special search screen just for “History.” You may limit your search to “Scholarly Journals” and to a particular area of history (e.g. Ancient Greek, English, or German).
