Glossary and Terminology

Terminology

Artifact:  A digital object that is shared or uploaded to the Ethos Portfolio.  These objects could include papers, posters, video files, audio files, pieces of written code or software, presentations, databases, etc. In the Ethos Portfolio, these objects are used as evidence to show completion or progress through the academic career of a student.  (The British spelling of 'artefact' may sometimes be used.)

Course-Embedded Assessment:  An assessment that is executed in each section of the approved Ethos course.  The student submission to this assessment should be the artifact that is uploaded to the Ethos Portfolio.  This assessment should be a part of the course grade but does not need to be assessed using the same rubric that will be applied to the portfolio.

Electronic portfolio:  An electronic portfolio (also known as an eportfolio, e-portfolio, digital portfolio, or online portfolio) is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the web. The Ethos Portfolio is an electronic portfolio.

Information Literacy:  'A set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."'  (Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, 2000.  Retrieved from https://bit.ly/2I9hNiY.)

Signature Assignment:  Assignments that are intended to serve as transactional discourse, in particular to those outside of the classroom. In all cases, the assessments should be designed for application of skills and concepts and should be sensitive to the goals and outcomes of not only the Ethos program.

Transactional Discourse:  The transmission of information via written or spoken means.
