Richard Baxter
George Whitefield (Pronounced Whitfield)
Figurines of John Wesley in the Pulpit
Ca. 1870
Staffordshire, England
These earthenware, ceramic ornaments designed in the gothic/rococo style popular at the time, were possibly inspired by an engraving by R. Owen of Hull, a popular engraver of the time, which appeared in the 1856 issue of “The Illustrated London News”. Note the different times on each ornament which were painted arbitrarily by each artist. This memorial to Wesley was never built due to a lack of funds.
