Finding Scholarly Journal Articles in Databases

Use this list of recommended databases when searching for scholarly journals and articles. Click the title to link to that database:

JSTOR
Provides access to back issues of scholarly journals generally published up to 3 or 5 years from the present. Also provides access to back issues of over 270 scholarly journal titles for history. All articles are of a scholarly nature.
Historical Abstracts
Abstracts are of exceptional value to the researcher because they provide summaries of articles that can be read and a decision made concerning their relevancy to a topic. Historical Abstracts is one of the primary databases that all history students should consult.

Subject headings are provided and are also very helpful for constructing an efficient search strategy. Icons are associated with each entry: (1) PDF Full Text, (2) Look in Local Journal Locator, and (3) Find It.

The number of articles in full text (PDF) in Historical Abstracts continues to grow. Some articles have the icon (Look in Local Journal Locator) that serves as a link to Journal Locator where information is displayed for one or more databases containing the title in full text and the associated publication range. The “Find It” icon is helpful because it will display the bibliographic information for the title and it will allow the user to capture the citation in accordance with the Chicago Style Manual. This information can then be given to Dr. Robinson (Interlibrary Loan & Reference Librarian) who will procure the item for you through the Interlibrary Loan Network.

There is a wealth of scholarly information that can be accessed through the use of Historical Abstracts. If you fail to use it, you will most certainly have missed the
“good stuff.”
Academic Search Complete (EBSCO)
Academic Search Complete is a multi-disciplinary database, with more than 6,100 full-text periodicals, including more than 5,100 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 10,100 journals and a total of 10,600 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database is updated daily and features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full-text titles in native (searchable) PDF format. Searchable cited references are provided for nearly 1,000 journals.
Journal Locator (EBSCO)
List of journal titles with links to various electronic full text articles. Dates of holdings are included.
Project Muse
Provides access to current issues of over 70 scholarly journal titles for history. Like JSTOR are articles are of a scholarly nature.
WorldCat
Use WorldCat to locate items in your library, and in other libraries.
